Aam Panna (Raw Mango Drink)

Love the summer weather…Sunny and bright out all the time.  But it looks like that we have an early summer in Florida.  We are already having temperatures soaring up to 95F which we usually see in June.  There are so many drinks we make back home to beat the heat such as shikanjvi, aap panna and many other fruit drinks.  I tried my hand on making Aam Panna  which I have always used the store bought ones before.  Thanks to my mom.  Surprisingly, it came out delicious.

  • 4 raw mangoes
  • 6-8 tbsp sugar ( I used 6)
  • 1 tsp rock salt (kala namak) or to taste
  • 2 tsps  roasted cumin powder
  • 10 cups water
  • 1/2 cup mint leaves ( i used less, didn’t have much)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Directions:

Wash  the mangoes thoroughly, and cut them in half.

Put 6 cups of water in a pan and boil the mangoes until soft.  You can use a pressure cooker to do that too.

When done scrape the mango out of the peel and discard the peel.  Do not the discard the water.  Now puree the mango along with the water and mint leaves and set aside.

In a pot or  a jug add the remaining 4 cups of water and add sugar.  Stir the sugar until it is completely dissolved.  Add about a little more than half of the mango puree to the water and mix well.  Add cumin powder, black pepper and rock salt and shake it well.  Adjust the spices as per your taste.

This can be replaced as a paani puri’s paani too.. The paani puri tasted so yummy. Serve it cold and it tastes so good.
