Punjabi Besan Ka Seera | Warm & Comforting Winter Drink

Some recipes are more than just food — they are memories, comfort, and a little piece of home in every bite or sip. For me, Punjabi Besan Ka Seera is exactly that. This warm, nourishing winter drink instantly takes me back to my childhood, when my mom would make it especially during cold winter mornings or late nights while I studied for exams.

There was something incredibly comforting about sitting with my books wrapped in a blanket while my mom handed me a warm bowl of besan seera. The aroma of roasted gram flour and ghee would fill the kitchen, and just one sip would make the chilly winter weather feel so much better. Even today, whenever I make it, it feels like a hug in a bowl and brings back the sweetest memories.

Punjabi Besan Ka Seera

What is Punjabi Besan Ka Seera?

If you’re familiar with Besan Halwa, this recipe is a little different. Besan Ka Seera is more of a warm, drinkable preparation that is lighter in texture and traditionally enjoyed during winters in Punjabi households.

It is made by slowly roasting gram flour (besan) in ghee and then cooking it with milk or water to create a smooth, comforting drink. It is lightly sweetened and flavored with warming spices like cardamom or turmeric, making it both delicious and soothing.

In many Punjabi homes, this drink is also considered a traditional winter remedy that helps provide warmth and energy, especially during cold weather.

Why This Drink is So Special to Me

Growing up, winters always meant cozy sweaters, school exams, and my mom’s kitchen filled with comforting smells. Besan ka seera was one of those simple things she made with so much love. She believed it helped keep us warm and energized, especially during long study nights.

Now when I make it for my own family, it feels like I’m continuing that same tradition. It’s amazing how certain recipes carry emotions and memories across generations.
