Mexican Wedding Cookies | Buttery, Nutty & Perfect for Holidays

If you’ve ever had Mexican Wedding Cookies, you know exactly what I mean when I say they’re dangerously good. Tiny, soft, buttery snowballs that melt the second they hit your tongue — the kind of cookie that disappears before you even realize how many you’ve eaten.

Despite the fancy name, these cookies are as humble as dessert gets. Just butter, sugar, flour, and nuts. That’s it. No icing, no filling, no secret ingredients — unless love counts (which, honestly, it should).

A Little History about these Cookies

Funny enough, these cookies didn’t actually start in Mexico. The recipe has been around for ages — think medieval Spain and beyond — before making its way across the ocean. Once the Spanish brought it to the Americas, people started tweaking it to fit local flavors. In Mexico, pecans became the nut of choice, and the cookie took on its own delicious personality.

You’ll find similar cookies all over the world — Russian tea cakes, snowballs, butterballs. Different names, same vibe. It’s proof that no matter where you’re from, everyone loves a simple, nutty, sugary treat.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz all purpose flour
  • 5 oz powdered sugar
  • 8 oz unsalted butter room temperature
  • 5 oz walnuts or pecans slightly toasted & chopped
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • ½ cup powdered sugar for rolling
  • ¼ snow sugar for dusting will find it in confectionery store

Instructions

  • Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. The more you whip the softer the cookies will be.
  • Then add vanilla essence along with toasted walnuts or pecans to it. Now add the flour and mix it using your hands. The dough will be super soft and sticky. After you mixed everything properly, refrigerate it for a few minutes so that you can handle the dough easily.
  • Make balls by taking a little dough at a time and roll them in the powdered sugar. Place it on the baking sheet. Preheat the oven at 350F and bake it for 12 mins.
  • Pull it out and let it cook down on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes and then transfer it to the cooling rack.
  • Once it cools down, dust the cookies with snow sugar using the strainer. If you don't have snow sugar then dust it with powdered sugar.
  • Enjoy it with a cup of tea or coffee.
