Ingredients:
- 1 cup urad dal (white one)
- 7-8 garlic cloves chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger chopped
- 1-2 green chilli chopped
- 2 dry red whole chillis
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 3/4 tsp turmeric
- salt to taste
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
- 3/4 tsp garam masala
- 1/4 cup tomato puree
- 3-4 curry leaves
- olive oil
- water
Directions:
Wash the dal throughly until water doesn’t look cloudy.
In a pressure cooker, add olive oil on a medium heat. ย Add cumin seeds, dry red chillies, asafetida, curry leaves. ย Let the cumin seeds splutter. Now add garlic and sautee until light brown, ย then add ginger, green chillies and sautee you for a couple of more minutes.
After sautรฉing for a few minutes, add the tomato puree along with salt, red chilli powder, turmeric, and garam masala. ย Roast the masala until you it leaves the oil.
Add the washed and drained dal to the mixture. ย Mix well and stir for a few minutes.
Add about 2-3 cups water and put the lid on the pressure cooker. ย Let it cook until 3-4 whistles and do not open until the steam goes down. ย After opening the pressure cooker, if you think the consistency is too thick then you can add a little boiled water and let the dal boil without a lid. ย When you get the desired consistency turn the gas off. ย Pour the dal in a serving bowl. ย Serve hot and garnish with cilantro and some lime juice before serving.
