A very popular dish from Andhra which is made with arhar dal and raw mango. Â It is a very simple dish which has a tanginess from the mango which enhances the flavor of the daal. Â This is the first time I made this and really in love with it.. Â Came out so good along with some rice. Â Beautiful combination for when you want something simple and delicious.
 Ingredients:
- 1.5 cup arhar dal (tuvar daal)
- 1 raw mango, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 red chili powder
- salt to taste
- 1-2 green chilies, chopped
- 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 whole dried chilies
- pinch of asafoetida
- water as required
- 2 tsp olive oil
- cilantro chopped for garnish
Directions:
Wash the dal and set aside. Â In a pressure cooker, add the dal, grated mango, tomatoes, green chilies, salt and turmeric. Â Cook till it is done.
Take it off and check the consistency of the dal. Â Adjust the consistency as you desire. Â Put it back on the heat and simmer for a few minutes.
In a frying pan, add oil and let it heat up. Â Then add cumin, mustard, asafoetida, red dry chilies. Â Let the seeds splatter and add the chopped garlic. Â Let it fry until a little brown and turn the gas off. Â Add the red chili powder and pour the mixture on top of the dal.

This dhal sounds delicious with the mango. I make similar gujarati dhak but we add kokum instead of mango.
Nice Nayna…I have recently heard about Kokum, will give it a try…
Nice and tangy dal..
Thanks Shobhaji…
